YOUTHINSPIRE COMMUNITY

"搞点嘢" — Cantonese for "getting something done" — is both a name and a philosophy. Youthinspire is a youth-led collective exploring the intersection of art, technology, and cultural identity. What began as thematic discussions grew into a global network: 500+ members from 40+ universities across 50+ cities worldwide, spanning China, UK, Japan, Australia, India, Mongolia, and beyond. Activities include 50+ curated discussions, 200+ written reflections, hackathons, a community magazine, a podcast series, design education workshops, book fair curation, and participation in major cultural events including Italy Design Week, Dutch Design Week, London Fashion Week, Macau, Shenzhen UNFOLD, and Bigger. Rooted in Guangdong spirit, the community encourages young people to find meaning through action and strength through connection in a rapidly changing world."搞点嘢" — Cantonese for "getting something done" — is both a name and a philosophy. Rooted in Guangdong spirit, the community encourages young people to find meaning through action and strength through connection in a rapidly changing world. The community's visual identity centers on a custom logo featuring the character "嘢" set in Iron Song typeface (铁宋), designed in collaboration with renowned Hong Kong typographer Sammy Or (柯炽坚), a professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University known for his pioneering work in Chinese typeface design.

Process

Born from a belief that creativity needs action, not just inspiration. Built the community from intimate thematic discussions — each one designed around a provocation at the intersection of art, tech, and culture. As conversations deepened, members began contributing their own reflections, turning passive audiences into active voices. Expanded programming into hackathons, a community magazine, a podcast series, and hands-on design education workshops. Developed the community's visual identity around the character "嘢" set in Iron Song typeface (铁宋), created in collaboration with Hong Kong typographer Sammy Or (柯炽坚) of Hong Kong Polytechnic University — grounding the brand in Cantonese cultural heritage. Strategically built partnerships across sectors — from government and academia (Tongji University College of Design and Innovation, Dongguan Cultural Center) to cultural events (China International Animation Copyright Protection and Trade Expo, Shenzhen UNFOLD, Italy Design Week, Dutch Design Week, London Fashion Week), commercial and cultural tourism partners (Songshan Lake ULAND, Hui Yi Cheng), and grassroots community spaces (Beilei Community, CSCHOOL). Through creativity and expression, the collective brings together ideas and makers across disciplines. Looking ahead, Youthinspire is expanding into robotics and hardware technology through collaboration with XbotPark Robotics Base — exploring new possibilities at the intersection of community, design, and engineering.
